Lincoln is the luxury division of the Ford Motor Company. Lincoln was founded in 1917 by Henry M. Leland and acquired by Ford in 1922, Lincoln has been producing vehicles since the 1920s for the upscale markets. The name “Lincoln” comes from Leland’s all-time hero Abraham Lincoln.

The Lincoln Navigator is the largest luxury SUV made by Ford and it’s Lincolns first four-wheel drive vehicle. It was introduced in 1998 and the only competitor at that time was the Cadillac Escalade. The Navigator is basically an upgraded version of the Ford Expedition, with a more powerful engine, better interior (including quality leather, fine wood and extensive carpeting).

Upgrades came a year later with a more powerful DOHC InTech engine and electrically-adjustable pedals, which was an “industry first” at that time. The new engine developed 300 hp or 220 kW and 355 ft-lbf or 481 Nm of torque. In 2000, more options were added like satellite navigation, cooled or heated front seats and side impact airbags.

Competitors from Cadillac and GMC quickly followed. Much like the Cadillac escalade, the Navigator found a spot with celebrities and the customized SUVs scene.
